Don’t rush when you brush!

A healthy and beautiful smile depends on good oral hygiene techniques. Good oral health is not only important for your self-esteem, but also for your overall well-being.

Taking daily preventative measures will ensure that:

  • Your teeth are clean and free of bacteria and debris
  • Your gums are a healthy pink and do not bleed or hurt when you floss and brush
  • You do not have bad breath (halitosis)
  • Your teeth will be free from cavities
  • You will not have to pay for expensive dental work later
  • You will not have to suffer through tooth extractions

To ensure that every tooth in your mouth is given proper attention, it is recommended that you brush your teeth for at least two full minutes, twice a day, with fluoride toothpaste. If you are not using an electric toothbrush, it is important to note that a soft bristle toothbrush will cause less damage to the gums. Some people think that brushing harder will remove more plaque, but this is not the case.

You should replace your toothbrush or electric/battery-operated toothbrush head, every three months to maintain good oral hygiene. After brushing, it is imperative that you rinse your toothbrush thoroughly and letting them air dry. Covering your toothbrush or storing it in a closed container can encourage harmful bacteria to grow.

Proper brushing techniques:

  • Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle.
  • Using a small circular motion, brush the side closest to your cheek, moving slowly until you reach the other side.
  • Gently move the brush back and forth in short strokes, paying attention to the gum line.
  • Brush every possible surface of your teeth
  • Don’t forget to brush the roof of your mouth and tongue

Floss daily to prevent tooth loss

It is essential that you floss before every brushing. It is impossible to reach the tight spaces between your teeth and under the gum-line with only a toothbrush. Flossing helps to remove the build-up of plaque and rids your mouth of harmful bacteria.

Proper flossing techniques:

  • You should use at least 46 centimetres of dental floss, winding the majority of the floss around your middle finger on one hand and the rest around the middle finger on the opposing hand. ‘
  • Gently rub the floss between your teeth and curve it around the tooth once it reaches your gum line.
  • Unwind fresh floss at each new tooth, taking it one tooth at a time.
  • Instead of floss, you could use a plastic or wooden pick, or any kind of interdental cleaner designed for cleaning in between your teeth

What about mouth rinse?

Antimicrobial mouth rinses will help reduce bacteria and plaque. Fluoride mouth rinses will help to prevent tooth decay. As not everyone should use a fluoride mouth rinse, it is important to discuss your options with TUSK Dental during your dental check-up.
