Common Bite Problems

Orthodontic problems can arise from genetic and environmental circumstances. Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age. You deserve a beautiful smile which will dramatically enhance the quality of your life. Listed below are some common bite problems that we specialise in correcting.

Crossbite can make it difficult to bite or chew because one or more of the upper teeth bite on the inside of the lower teeth. Early correction of crossbite is recommended as it can cause a multitude of problems.

Problems associated with crossbite:

  • The jaw t shifts to one side
  • Premature wear of teeth which leads to gum disease & bone loss
  • Defective chewing patterns
  • Unattractive smile

Open bite

Open bite occurs for a variety of reasons such as digit sucking, tongue thrust, or when the jaws don’t grow evenly. Open bite occurs when the upper and lower front teeth do not overlap sufficiently. The success of treatment depends on how early it is detected.

Problems associated with open bite:

  • Speech problems
  • Eating problems
  • Excessive wear of teeth that will lead to gum disease & bone loss
  • Unattractive smile

Overbite occurs when the upper front teeth extend out over the lower front teeth. Normally, there is no contact between the upper and lower front teeth and this can cause the lower front teeth to bite into the roof of the mouth. This happens because an unequal amount of front teeth erupted, over-development of the bone that supports the teeth, or the upper and lower jaw did not develop properly.

Problems associated with overbite:

  • Front teeth bite into the gum tissue of the upper palate
  • Excessive wear of teeth that will lead to gum disease & bone loss
  • Jaw or joint problems
  • Unattractive smile

Overjet relates to how far the teeth protrude forward. In other words, the lower teeth are too far behind the upper front teeth. This is caused by an abnormal alignment of the molars, a skeletal imbalance of the upper and lower jaw, twisted upper incisors, lacking lower teeth, or a mixture of all of the above.

Problems associated with overjet:

  • Excessive wear of teeth that will lead to gum disease & bone loss
  • Unattractive smile
  • Increased risk of injury to the front teeth

Underbite occurs when the lower teeth protrude past the front teeth. It is generally caused by flared upper incisors, abnormal growth of the upper and lower jaw, or missing lower teeth. It is essential that underbite is treated early.

Problems associated with underbite:

  • Facial abnormalities such as an extended chin
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, and speaking
  • Excessive wear of teeth that will lead to gum disease & bone loss
  • Underbites have also been known to cause tmj which is an extremely painful affliction of the jaw joint
  • Unattractive smile
